NBN Connection Types

Not to worry — you’re not alone. Many businesses and households find it challenging to understand which NBN connection type they have and why it matters. As you explore the available options, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by different technologies, speed tiers, and technical terminology.

The National Broadband Network (NBN) has been rolled out nationwide, delivering faster internet speeds and more stable, reliable connections across Australia. Designed to support modern online services, cloud applications, video conferencing, and communication tools, NBN provides a strong foundation for improved performance in both home and business environments.

Fibre to the premises (FTTP)

FTTP is the strongest NBN connection type as it runs directly into the building. The direct connection allows it to consistently deliver high speed internet.

The connection does have an extra box inside your property, but besides this, we do not charge more for supplying this connection.

Fibre to the curb (FTTC)

FTTC is similar to FTTN. It connects a distribution unit out in the street, commonly found within the pit outside the premises, to the copper running into the building.

Fibre to the building (FTTB)

Similar to FTTN, FTTB is for apartment blocks and larger building of similar structure.

The Fibre is run into the building, more commonly the basement. From there it is run to each room via the existing cabling that is already in place.

Fibre to the node (FTTN)

FTTN uses the copper out on the street to run the NBN connection into your building. It is the alternative to FTTP and will not offer the same performance.

The connection runs into the building the same as the outdated ADSL services.

Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC)

Using the existing cable TV connections such as Foxtel, HFC is less common within business’. A residential solution also offers an extra device to convert the coaxial cable into a modem compatible feed.

HFC is only offered in a small area but is still a stable NBN connection that is offered.

Fixed Wireless

With an antenna fitted to your house, data is able to transfer from an NBN transmission tower.

This needs to be fitted by an approved NBN installer.

The image on the left offers a good understanding of how it is connected. Common in rural area’s.

Satellite

The satellite connection is for hard to reach destinations. Used for areas where fixed wireless is not available. A satellite dish is installed on the property which then translates the connection into the building.

Wireless 5G Internet

5G is the latest generation of mobile internet, delivering faster speeds and lower latency than ever before. It allows more devices to connect at once, making it ideal for streaming, remote work, and smart tech.

Coverage may vary by location, and 5G is not yet available in all areas.

Frequently Asked Questions – NBN

Q: What NBN plan is best for business?

A: The best NBN plan for your business depends on your team size, internet usage, and applications. Businesses using VoIP, cloud services, or video conferencing typically benefit from higher-speed plans with stable upload and download rates. Sixfam helps Melbourne, regional Victoria, NSW, and Australia-wide businesses select the right business-grade NBN plan to ensure consistent performance and reliability.

Q: Do businesses need static IP addresses?
A: Yes, many businesses benefit from a static IP address, especially if you use VoIP phone systems, remote access, cloud applications, or host servers. Static IPs provide a fixed address for your internet connection, making it easier to manage devices, run business applications, and maintain security. Sixfam includes static IP options on all business NBN plans.

Q: Can business NBN support VoIP and cloud phone systems?
A: Absolutely. Sixfam’s business NBN plans are fully compatible with VoIP systems, including 3CX phone systems, as well as other cloud-based applications. Reliable internet speeds and low latency ensure crystal-clear calls and smooth operation for cloud services, no matter your location — Melbourne, regional Victoria, NSW, or nationwide.

Q: How does Sixfam support business NBN installations?
A: Sixfam provides end-to-end Australian-based support, including consultation, plan selection, installation guidance, and ongoing technical support. Our team ensures your NBN connection is optimised for your business operations, whether it’s a head office in Melbourne, a regional site, or multiple locations across Australia. We also assist with upgrades to FTTP connections for maximum speed and performance.

Q: What NBN connection types are available in regional areas?
A: In regional Victoria, NSW, and other areas, NBN is available via several technologies:

  • Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) – high-speed, dedicated fibre.
  • Fibre to the Node (FTTN) – fibre to a local node, with copper to your premises.
  • Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) – fibre closer to your premises with short copper connections.
  • Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) – high-speed internet over existing cable networks.
  • Fixed Wireless and Satellite – for remote locations.

Sixfam helps businesses determine which NBN connection type is best for their location and operational needs, and assists with upgrades and installation for business-grade performance.
